Is Wakefield named after one or all of the Wakefields?

There is a small town south of Nelson and Richmond called Wakefield.

It was first settled in 1843 and its original name was Pitfure. (which is a prety ugly name for a town) The name was changed to Wakefield.

Many people think that this town was named in memory of Arthur Wakefield who was killed at Tuamarina. But, historians think that it was actually named Wakefield before his death and was named after a small town in Yorkshire, England called Wakefield that one of the original settlers came from.
